In this series of articles, we present a small selection of products from each region to inspire you and help you continue your flavourful and eco-responsible journey. Here, we set off to discover the culinary delights of eastern Luxembourg and the Mullerthal region!
Mullerthal: local flavours in a beautiful natural setting
The Mullerthal region, known as Mëllerdall in Luxembourgish, lies in eastern Luxembourg. It is often referred to as Luxembourg's Little Switzerland. Mullerthal is home to astonishing rock formations and an outstanding biotope. This natural heritage can be explored in the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall nature park, part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks network.
Mëllerdaller Produzenten
In this region, Mëllerdaller Produzenten (Mullerthal-based producers) offer quality products based on an environmentally friendly, economically sustainable approach that is close to consumers. The initiative began in 2005 with six Mullerthal-based producers who wanted to work more closely together and market their locally made or locally grown products more effectively. More than 20 companies have now joined the scheme, which offers a way of discovering the region through its delicious produce.
Find out more about their know-how and products on their YouTube channel.
Consortium member Vizerei Eppelpress has been processing fruit from the region since 2008. Taking as its starting point the idea "Äre Viz vun Ären Äppel" (Your juice from your apples), this family-run business has developed a range of products and services based on apples. "The taste of the region is reflected in our apple juice – we only process apples from tall trees. Our jam is homemade, cooked in a copper cauldron, without additives," they explain. Their products include apple juice, apple juice blends, syrups, jams and vinegars.
Other more recent regional initiatives are responding to the trend of consumers cutting down on alcohol. The Opyos team launched their distillery business in autumn 2016, taking on board the advice of local industry experts and aiming to revive the ancient tradition of distillation and give it a modern twist. Their products include Alcohol-Free Juniper Essence, a combination of plant and spice distillates based on classic juniper as well as cardamom and citrus fruits.
Where can I find these products?
Regiomats are a series of automatic dispensers found in different locations across the region, where you can buy local products 24/7. Fresh produce markets in Echternach (on the second Wednesday of every month) and Junglinster (every Saturday) are also great places to find products from the Mëllerdaller Produzenten.
Eppelpress products are available in shops in several towns and villages.
Opyos sells products online on its website and via Lëtzshop. The distillery also offers guided tours with tastings.
In the heart of the Mullerthal region, Bottega Gudde Kascht is a grocery store that showcases regional produce, driven by a passion for good food. The shop offers a carefully selected range of products as well as dishes based on local, seasonal produce and traditional know-how, in a rustic and welcoming setting.
