Luxembourg's terroir and its wide variety of local products showcase the know-how of the nation's producers and the richness of our regions. Whether you're visiting Luxembourg or you live here, you can (re)discover the country through its flavours, while embracing a sustainable and inclusive approach. In this series of articles, we present a small selection of products per region to inspire you and help you continue your flavourful and eco-responsible journey afterwards. Here, we set off to discover the culinary delights of eastern Luxembourg and the Moselle region!

Moselle: where traditional grape and wine growing meets alcohol-free lifestyle

The Moselle region, known as d'Musel by Luxembourgers, lies in the east of Luxembourg. Along its 42km course from Schengen to Wasserbillig, the Moselle has crafted a hilly landscape, cut out of limestone, representing an ideal location for wine growing. This region is well known for its long-standing wine growing tradition and renowned for producing gentle, sparkling white wines bearing the Moselle Luxembourgeoise AOC label. But this Moselle tradition is also able to evolve and adapt to new drinks trends.

In numerous Western countries, since the early 2000s, we have actually seen a marked reduction in the consumption of alcohol among adolescents and young adults, particularly amongst Gen Z (people born between 1997 and 2012). Consequently, the market for zero-alcohol drinks or those with no-/low-alcohol content has experienced strong growth in Europe.

Domaines Vinsmoselle, the biggest producer of wine and crémant in the country, has already launched some no-alcohol wines and sparkling wines. The offer of the Schlink wine estate likewise includes a white wine and a sparkling wine that are alcohol-free.

Created in 2023 at Greiveldange, the Beerbusch company was born of the desire to offer a no-alcohol beverage that is still pleasant to drink, without sacrificing taste or character. They have therefore created a spirit developed from 13 carefully-selected organic spices. "Sip the flavor, skip the alcohol" is the idea that inspires their mocktail recipes made using this artisanal aromatic drink.

Beerbusch also offers Appel Viz BIO apple juice.

Sou schmaacht Lëtzebuerg: buy local, savour the terroir

Sou schmaacht Lëtzebuerg (how Luxembourg tastes, in English) is an invitation to discover Luxembourg through its flavours. This campaign showcases those committed to getting the best out of Luxembourg's terroir: farmers, wine producers and market gardeners who offer quality local produce. The initiative creates a direct link between these producers and the consumers, recognising their expertise and facilitating access to their products.

You can go to the Sou schmaacht Lëtzebuerg website to see which producers sell their products directly to the public, find those based near you and learn more about what they do. This is a great way of getting to know the agricultural community around you and encouraging local producers committed to responsible and transparent methods.

Buying directly from producers is not only a way of supporting the local economy; it is also a chance to rediscover the wealth and diversity of Luxembourgish produce, as close to the farm as possible.

Restaurants bearing the Sou schmaacht Lëtzebuerg label offer another way of discovering the delights of local producers as they are incorporated into delicious culinary creations. All over Luxembourg, chefs are sourcing ingredients from producers in the network and concocting dishes that reflect the abundance of local produce.

Their menus reflect the changing seasons, using fresh ingredients supplied directly by local producers. This close partnership with producers is a source of culinary inspiration and creativity, and also a guarantee of traceability and quality.

Choosing a Sou schmaacht Lëtzebuerg restaurant is about much more than a simple meal. You will experience a celebration of local producers, with every locally sourced ingredient appreciated and elevated by the expertise of talented chefs.
