Adventures on bike: ride through Luxembourg

Would you like to explore the Grand Duchy in search of unusual places? Are you a fan of Slow Tourism? Do you want to limit your environmental footprint by using soft mobility? Luxembourg offers a comprehensive range of services and initiatives to help you explore the local regions by bike. These options include an ever-increasing network of cycle paths, attractive rental offers and a multimodal mobility initiative.

Multimodal mobility - cycle anywhere, anytime

"Multimodal" has been a cornerstone of Luxembourg's mobility concept. Free public transport has grown in popularity, with an increasing emphasis on allowing people to switch from one mode of transport to another.

Many railway stations offer bikeboxes, secure boxes for bike storage. If you have an access card (available for free here), you can leave your bike while you take the train to your workplace. You can pick it up anytime you want.

Furthermore, the network has been adapted so that you can take your bike with you. The carriages on national trains have spaces reserved for bicycles. This option is particularly popular with many tourists who want to explore the country from behind their handlebars.

Also, the cities of Luxembourg and Esch-sur-Alzette, as well as the Moselle region, offer 24/7 bicycle rental services that use electric bikes, so you can get around without getting tired - more details below.

Cycling paths - promoting slow tourism

Whether nestled in nature, along old railway tracks, on small trails at the foot of an ancient castle or along a river, Luxembourg's cycle paths are as varied as they are impressive.

The Grand Duchy currently has a network of 600km of cycling paths, which should reach around 900km by 2028.

A series of cycling "expressways" link the country's regions. This group of 23 cycle paths is expanding rapidly and developing into a dense grid that will facilitate and accelerate travel throughout the country. Additionally, a series of local and regional cycling paths allow you to leave the urban areas and explore the hidden beauty of our country.

You can even get lost in the country, albeit in a good (and luxurious) way! The Bed+Bike label lists a large number of participating hotels and hostels that are fully adapted to cyclists. These establishments offer a range of services tailored to bicycles, including secure bike storage, repair and maintenance kits, specific information for cyclists and meals to help you conquer the next stage of your journey.

Is too much luggage weighing you down? Don't worry, we have a solution. Just register with MoveWeCarry.lu and leave your suitcases at your accommodation. The national railway company CFL will collect your bags and deliver them to your next stop. You'll have clean clothes waiting for you when you arrive at your next destination.

Bicycle rental – a fast and easy service

Bicycle rental services are available in selected regions, and the cities of Luxembourg and Esch-sur-Alzette have an operational self-service rental bike system:

  • Vel'OH! is available in the city of Luxembourg, and it is also present in the surrounding municipalities.
  • Vël'Ok is the regional rental service in Esch-sur-Alzette, with stations located throughout the south-west of the country.
  • Rentabike Miselerland offers bicycles to rent in the major towns of the Luxembourg Moselle region.

The Vëlosummer – for the pleasure of cycling

The Vëlosummer (summer of cycling) brings together cycling enthusiasts for the duration of a summer. For every edition, a number of regional circular routes are created, with varying degrees of difficulty, for the joy of families and experienced cyclists alike. For several weekends, roads will even be closed to motorised traffic in order to provide a unique, unrestricted cycling experience. This event not only offers the ideal opportunity to hop on your bike, but it also allows you to explore Luxembourg and appreciate its diverse landscape and friendly people.
