Activities for children: family adventures, culture, and nature

Looking for ideas for a family outing? Want to pass on your passion for nature, culture, or science to your children? With its adventure parks, castles, museums, festivals and events, Luxembourg is a safe bet. Here's our selection of activities in the four corners of the country.

Adventure, here I come!

Would you like to experience an exciting adventure with your family? So put your courage to the test in one of our many adventure parks. Echternach, the oldest town of Luxembourg, is home to the youth hostel, which boasts a 14-metre high climbing wall. If you'd rather expend your energy in the South of Luxembourg, the Parc Le'h Adventures is a great option. It offers monkey bridges, zip lines, Tarzan jumps and even a Bambini trail for the littlest ones. Or why not go to Steinfort Adventure, near the Belgian border? It's a treetop adventure park with 10 trails offering various levels of difficulty.

For families who prefer more quiet discovery-filled activities, the Parc Merveilleux in Bettembourg will be your cup of tea. You can watch from up close some animals originating from five continents - an unmissable experience! Before or after a nice meal at one of the park's two restaurants, children can expend their energy and enjoy the many attractions, such as a playground and mini-golf.

Relax and let your children have fun!

Playgrounds are a great opportunity to unwind, and the most famous ones can be found in the capital. Your children can revel in parks such as Merl Park, the Kockelscheuer playground or the Municipal Park's well-known pirate ship. Discover the capital's playgrounds on the website of Luxembourg City.

Outside the City of Luxembourg, the Mersch municipal park is also a perfect place to relax with its colourful children's playgrounds. Moreover, thanks to the ecological use of the park, fauna and flora can be seen around the lake and from the terrace of the pavilion!

Want to take your kids to playgrounds beyond your neighbourhood?

With the Spillplaz.lu App you can search by postcode or city, but also by sorting other criteria: areas for children under 3 years old, covered playgrounds or nearby restaurants, for example. All this in four languages: French, English, German and Luxembourgish.

Information is also available on the website www.spillplaz.lu.

Discover history and culture as a family

As part of a family outing, find out about the Grand Duchy's different traditions, customs and tourist attractions. Lovers of knights and princesses will delight in the country's many castles: Koerich Castle or Vianden Castle all host during the summer fabulous medieval festivals that will immerse you into a whole new world. In Luxembourg City, why not take a tour of the fortress, the Bock Casemates or the Petrusse Casemates? Don't forget that the Grand Ducal Palace is open to the public from July to September!

If you are an art lover, you'll fall for Luxembourg's museums, which are the perfection alternative for not so sunny days. Please note that most of them offer special activities for children: MUDAM offers guided tours for children, the Casino-Forum for Contemporary Art organises guided tours and workshops for children and young people and the Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart welcomes children to creative workshops. Please note that the Tramsmusée (Tram Museum) and the Vitarium offer tours that are specifically adapted to family visits.

In April 2024, a museum dedicated entirely to children opened its doors in Wiltz: Plomm Kannermusée. Reserved for 1-12-year-olds and their families, the museum is designed around participation, whether in the permanent exhibition, the Tree of Tales, or in the creative workshops.

A day exploring nature

A wide range of nature activities can be enjoyed in Luxembourg, which will no doubt spark your children's curiosity. The National Natural History Museum takes you on a path of discovery of our planet and offers activities for children via its Science Club and Panda Club. The Wasserbillig Aquarium and the Butterfly Garden, as well as the Touristic Domain of the Ardennes Draught Horse Robbesscheier where you can discover workhorses of the Ardennes, are fascinating for the young and old alike.

In order to raise your children's awareness, training courses and workshops organised by the Centre for Nature Protection that goes by the name D'Haus vun der Natur are experiences not to be missed. If you would rather discover Luxembourgish landscapes in peace and quiet, a great family activity is to visit one of the various lakes of the country. Remerschen Lake, Upper Sûre Lake and Echternach Lake are the most popular ones. What's more, trips to these lakes can easily be combined with other activities, such as adventure parks!
