Fresh vegetables straight from the field, Angus cattle on wide-open pastures, handmade organic pasta and the finest goat's cheese – Luxembourg's organic farms show just how diverse sustainable agriculture can be. But they produce far more than just high-quality food: through their farm shops, educational programmes and innovative concepts, they strengthen the regional economy and create places for people to come together. Here, we present five organic farms that each embrace sustainability, animal welfare and regionality in their own different ways.

Fromburger Haff

Fromburger Haff in Osweiler is a perfect example of how sustainable farming and regionality go hand in hand. The Weydert family has been running the 68-hectare farm in eastern Luxembourg for three generations. At the heart of the farm is a herd of Angus suckler cows, which spend almost the entire year out at pasture. The premium-quality meat from this Scottish breed is sold alongside other products from the farm and the surrounding region at the on-site shop and at the two Fromburger shops in Echternach and Schanz.

A particular highlight of the farm is its diverse vegetable garden. Since 2017, the family has followed a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model, under which around 50 families receive a weekly basket of freshly harvested vegetables during the growing season. Visitors who want a more hands-on experience can help with the harvest and pick vegetables straight from the field. On an area of 1,720 m², the farm also cultivates several varieties of organic tomatoes, which are sold at the farm's own shops and in food stores throughout Luxembourg.

At Fromburger Haff, sustainability goes beyond organic farming – it also encompasses biodiversity, short supply chains and a closed-loop approach to the farm's day-to-day operations. Anyone looking to immerse themselves more deeply in rural life can combine their visit with a stay in one of the cosy holiday apartments in the heart of the picturesque Mullerthal Region.

Am Gäertchen

At Am Gäertchen in Hosingen, organic farming goes hand in hand with social commitment. The Forum pour l'emploi project helps people get back into work and improves their prospects through personal support, skills development and vocational training.

At its organic growing sites in Hosingen, Neidhausen and Bastendorf, Am Gäertchen grows seasonal vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers on around 15 hectares of land, both in greenhouses and outdoors. The wide-ranging selection also includes young plants and button mushrooms.

The harvest and the products made from it are sold directly at the shop in Hosingen and at the weekly markets in Ettelbruck and Diekirch. Customers can also subscribe to an "Abokëscht", a seasonal fruit and vegetable box. In this way, Am Gäertchen combines regional organic production with social value and shows how farming can benefit both individuals and the wider community.

Kass-Haff

Kass-Haff in Rollingen is much more than just a farm. The biodynamic operation is a place where people can meet, learn and share ideas. Since becoming a societal impact company (SIS) in 2023, the farm has combined organic farming with educational work and social initiatives.

The founders and managing directors Tom Kass and Anja Staudenmayer aim to promote a sustainable farming cycle, preserve biodiversity and raise awareness of the importance of future-proof agriculture. Guided farm tours, workshops, educational activities and cultural events invite visitors to experience farming first-hand.

Visitors can also buy products made on the farm – including meat, eggs, vegetables, cheese and other regional specialities – directly from the Naturata farm shop.

Dudel-Magie

Pasta made in Luxembourg? Absolutely! At Dudel-Magie in Sprinkange, tagliatelle, fusilli and unusual varieties such as HunneKroun and Wanternuddel are made entirely by hand – using only organic ingredients from regional partner farms in Luxembourg and Germany.

But this family-run business has much more to offer than just pasta – another key focus is organic poultry farming. The farm produces most of the feed itself from home-grown cereals and legumes. Under the “Coq des Près” label, the farm offers fresh chicken as well as specialities such as gyros, chipolatas and a range of sauces.

The products are available directly from the farm and from numerous food and delicatessen shops, and are even served in canteens across Luxembourg. The family-run business has received the "Bio-Agrar-Präis" in recognition of its commitment to regional organic production.

Biohaff Baltes

The family-run farm Biohaff Baltes in Stegen specialises in high-quality goat's milk products. In 2007, it became the first farm in Luxembourg to produce organic goat's cheese from its own milk in its own dairy.

Around 250 goats now live on the farm. Some 150 dairy goats provide the milk used each day to make fresh cheese and a wide range of soft and semi-hard cheeses. Quality starts on the pasture: most of the goats' feed comes from the farm itself, including hay from its own drying facility. The cheese specialities are now available in supermarkets, organic food shops and many restaurants throughout Luxembourg.

But goats are not the only animals kept at Biohaff Baltes – the farm is also home to Icelandic horses. Under the name “Islandpäerd vum Äernzdall”, the family runs a riding school and breeding programme. The range of activities also includes horse-assisted interventions for children and young people, as well as educational activities centred around the farm animals. Animal welfare, species-appropriate husbandry and respect for nature are always at the heart of the farm's approach.
