Christmas Markets in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Greater Region
Let Luxembourg's Christmas markets get you in the festive spirit! During the Holiday Season, the towns and cities in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg transform into a delightful winter wonderland of charmingly decorated huts, enchanting illuminations, and delicious treats. We've put together a selection of the best markets that are sure to get you in the mood for Christmas.
The Winterlights in the heart of the capital
In Luxembourg City, the Christmas markets are an integral part of the Winterlights programme. Almost 100 wooden huts and attractions await in various places around the City. The Winterlights 2024 start on the 22nd of November and run until the 1st of January.
Festive highlights in the Old Town
From the 22nd of November to the 1st of January, the Lëtzebuerger Chrëschtmaart at Place d'Armes and the Wantermaart at Place de la Constitution welcome Luxembourg's residents and visitors with a rich tapestry of festive delights. These two Christmas markets in the Old Town are just a snowball's throw away from each other and both offer a varied selection of handmade products, festive decorations and regional culinary delights. The market at Place d'Armes is particularly popular, due to its magnificent Christmas tree, traditional nativity scene and enchanting winter train (Wanterzuch). Merry-go-rounds at both markets ensure plenty of fun for the little ones. And the Wantermaart even has trampolines. But the true highlights are the impressive 32-metre-high big wheel and the cafés and restaurants, which offer a spectacular panoramic view of the Petrusse Valley and the Adolphe Bridge.
Small but lovely
Besides the main Christmas markets, Luxembourg City also hosts some smaller but equally enchanting markets during the festive period:
- The Niklosmaart (Saint Nicholas and Advent market) takes place from the 22nd of November until the 1st of January on Place de Paris in the heart of the train station area. The impressive 22-meter-high Niklosbam and 14 festively decorated wooden huts immerse the square in a magical atmosphere. Even St Nicholas himself makes an appearance on selected days to welcome children into his home.
- The Wanterpark is back! Follow the heart trails into the centre of the municipal park, where the outdoor ice-skating rink on the Kinnekswiss awaits you again this year. From the 22nd of November to the 1st of January, visitors can skate on the nearly 800-square-metre temporary ice rink and enjoy culinary delights at the gourmet food village against a backdrop of live music.
- For children and their families, Winterkids returns to Place Guillaume II this year with four chalets, including a gastronomic chalet. From the 7th until the 29th of December, the children and their parents can also participate in over 100 workshops in a creative atmosphere, enjoy puppet shows and storytelling, or simply revel in singing and music.
- Would you like to end the year with a good deed? Then visit the Charity Market on Grand Rue from the 13th to the 15th of December, where six chalets offer a wide array of handmade Christmas gifts. All proceeds go to charitable causes.
But the Christmas cheer isn't limited to the capital – other cities throughout the Grand Duchy also promise some delightful festive experiences for their visitors:
Christmas market in Differdange
The town of Differdange is ending the year on a high by hosting the 47th edition of Luxembourg's oldest Christmas market. In addition to the 30 charmingly decorated chalets offering a variety of festive foods and products, visitors can look forward from the 29th of November to the 22nd of December to an ice-skating rink, a curling lane, and a free merry-go-round to keep the younger visitors entertained. Numerous events are held over the four weekends of the market, including a visit from the Kleeschen and the Chrëschtlaf.
Christmas and medieval market in Dudelange
Dudelange will also be aglow with festive charm in the run-up to Christmas. From 23rd of November to 15th of December, the Winter Market welcomes visitors at Place am Duerf. From 6th to 15th of December, the traditional Christmas Market on the town hall square is hosting more than 60 stalls presenting a wide array of gift ideas, traditional Christmas treats, and entertainment. Also from 6th to 15th of December, the medieval village on Place Kinnen, with its campfire and traditional merry-go-round, transports visitors back to a bygone era.
