In Luxembourg, as in all democratic countries, citizens elect representatives to act on their behalf.

Luxembourgish nationals have the right to vote and to stand as candidates in elections from the age of 18.

The right to vote in political elections is the most important political right. For persons of Luxembourg nationality, voting in elections (legislative, municipal and European) is compulsory.

In the case of legislative elections, only Luxembourgers have the status of electors (active role) and only they can stand as candidates (passive role).

In contrast, nationals of a member state of the European Union residing in Luxembourg may take part in municipal elections and European elections and stand as candidates in those.

Foreigners of non-Community origin may also, under certain conditions, take part in municipal elections.

Procedures: You will find detailed information on how to participate in municipal, legislative and European elections on the Citizens' portal.
