The Oktav is being celebrated during two weeks in Luxembourg City. This is the most important religious event in the region. Believers from the Grand Duchy and the Greater Region embark on a pilgrimage to the cathedral Our Lady of Luxembourg to pay tribute to Mary, Mother of Jesus, patron saint of Luxembourg and comforter of the afflicted (consolatrix afflictorum).
The 'Oktavsmäertchen' on the Knuedler (Place Guillaume II), as well as well as around the Gëlle Fra (Place de la Constitution) is a thematic market with food stalls and small gift shops. As for the Oktav, it ends with a solemn procession during which the statue of the Virgin Mary is borne through the streets of the city centre.
