The Luxembourg school system is multilingual. It leads up to the internationally recognised school leaving diploma or a certificate of aptitude, which is basically directed at working life.
The Luxembourg Constitution confers on the State the right to organise and regulate the education system. The majority of schools are therefore free public schools.
Apart from the public education system, the Grand Duchy also has a number of private and international schools.
Schooling is compulsory between the ages of 4 and 16 years.
University education in the Grand Duchy is provided by the University of Luxembourg, which comprises three faculties. A number of foreign universities have a campus in the Grand Duchy.
Lifelong learning, also called continuous training, is for anyone not in the school system, whatever their age or level of studies, who wishes to increase their knowledge in various areas.
