The Olympic Games of the Small States of Europe, which ended on Saturday 1 June, were a success for Luxembourg, which finished at the top of the medal table at the end of the last events. For the third time in a row, the Grand Duchy took first place. For the 2019 edition, they won a total of 76 medals, 26 gold, 27 silver and 23 bronze. Cyprus and Iceland ranked 2nd and 3rd.
Despite the rain of medals throughout the five-day competition, the Luxembourg athletes failed to win a gold medal on the last day of the GSSE. However, they still managed to win three more silver medals and three bronze medals. The silver ones were won by tennis players Ugo Nastasi and Elenora Molinaro, as well as the basketball team, which lost by two points to Montenegro.
The female basketball players won a bronze medal thanks to their victory over Malta (76-58), the volleyball players after a clear 3-0 win over San Marino and Tessy Gonderinger at the women's single table tennis tournament.
The 2019 GSSE in Montenegro ended with a friendly closing ceremony that saw swimmer Pit Brandenburger as the standard-bearer leading the Luxembourg delegation ready to take up the challenge at the 19th edition of the GSSE, to be held in Andorra in 2021. In all, 140 Luxembourg athletes, active in nine disciplines, participated in GSSE in Montenegro.
