Luxembourg celebrates the Oktav!

The Oktav has been Luxembourg's most important religious festival since the 17th century and attracts some 60,000 believers every year.

06-octaveFor 2 weeks, from 6 until 21 May 2017, the country's parishes and the faithful from the German Eifel region, the Belgian Luxembourg Province and the French Lorraine embark on a pilgrimage towards Luxembourg in order to celebrate and honour the Virgin Mary, also called Our Lady of Luxembourg.

For the duration of the 'Oktav', the statue of Our Lady of Luxembourg, richly dressed and adorned for the occasion, is placed in the central cathedral choir on a special votive altar.

The Oktav's highlights

This year, several events are important to note:

  • on 6 May at 4 p.m.: solemn opening of the Oktav
  • on 7 May at 7.30 a.m.: Youth Pilgrimage
  • on 8 May at 5.30 p.m.: Solidarity Prayer
  • on 21 May at 3 p.m.: closing procession. During the closing procession, the statue of the Virgin Mary is being carried through the streets of the capital. Apart from the many faithful, representatives of the Grand Ducal Court, the Government, the Chamber of Deputies, Justice and other institutions of public life take part.
