Luxembourg: a connected society

Only 3% of Luxembourg's households don't have access to the Internet

In 2016, nearly every household in Luxembourg had access to the Internet (97%). The few "off-line" households either don't have any use for the Internet or are connected elsewhere. They are mostly homes without children or teenagers. 95% of the users log-on on a daily basis or almost every day, for the greater part via their Smartphone.

92% of the Luxembourgers provide personal data on the Internet

A recent study by Statec on ICT (Information and communication technology) deals with confidentiality and the protection of personal data. It reveals that only 8% of the surfers refrain form sharing personal information on the Internet. Furthermore, only 4 out of 10 internet users read the privacy clause before providing any personal data. However, 6 out of 10 intentionally block the geolocalisation function and/or the access to their social media profile.

The Smartphone is the residents' favourite means of exploring the web.

Of all the connected devices, the Smartphone is by far the most popular to surf the web (83%) followed by the laptop (74%), the desktop computer (68%) and the tablet (53%). As for the connected television (smart TV), it is most popular in the 35 to 44 years age group (27%).

The Luxembourger is an e-mail enthousiast

Whereas almost 80% of the surfers have acquired a service or goods for private use online in 2016, the most popular activity online was the exchange of e-mails (95%!), followed by browsing the news (89%) and gathering information on services and goods (88%). In other words: online shopping is in. However, only 42% of households indicated using online payment services.

Another important aspect of the activities online is the interaction with the public administration. The study informs us that 65% of the Luxembourg residents have downloaded official forms for private purposes; 56% have contacted, via the web, the public authorities for a request for information and 36% to hand in forms.
