Luxembourg's competitiveness takes off!

In the 2015 edition of the World Competitiveness Yearbook of the Swiss International Institute for Management Development (IMD), Luxembourg loses a few ranks and ends up 11th among the world's 61 most competitive countries. The Grand Duchy has to accept some harsh setbacks in some of the sub-indicators.

'Architecture in unstable times' treats migration in the 20th and 21st centuries

La Fondation Servais vient de décerner le prix Servais 2016 à Jean Portante pour le roman L’Architecture des temps instables paru en langue française aux éditions Phi à Differdange. Le prix Servais récompense depuis 1992 l'ouvrage littéraire le plus significatif paru au cours de l'année précédente. Il est décerné annuellement, sur proposition d’un jury indépendant. Le prix Servais est doté de 6.000 euros.



The Theatres of the City of Luxembourg have presented the 2016-2017 season

Opera – dance – theatre: the new season brings together international stars and national works

Le Grand théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg et le Théâtre des Capucins ont lancé leur programme pour la saison 2016/2017, un programme qui comprend 66 spectacles, dont 12 productions ou coproductions nationales, convoquant pas moins de 70 artistes et créateurs nationaux pour 144 représentations. Des noms de renommée internationale s’ajoutent à la programmation, comme Isabelle Huppert et Jude Law.

From 28 May to 27 November, the Grand Duchy will be 'Reporting from the Front'

The Venice Architecture Biennale, focusing on 'Reporting from the Front', will take place from 28 May to 27 November 2016. The Grand Duchy will be represented by the 'Tracing Transitions' project in the Ca' del Duca, which over the years has travelled upwards in the list of places for architecture fans to visit. A must for fans, then, and for anyone travelling to Venice in the near future.

Participate in Luxembourg's biggest popular nighttime event!

Ready, steady, go! On Saturday 28 May 2016 the 11th edition of the night-marathon ING Europe Marathon Luxembourg is going to take place. For this event, the Luxembourg capital is going to be transformed into a giant course on which thousands of runners and onlookers meet. The ones in order to take up the challenge, the others to cheer them on.

Luxembourg’s gift for Finns: jazz concert by the Grammy awarded conductor will culminate the Grand Duke’s state visit

Within the framework of the Luxembourg state visit in the Republic of Finland

Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg are currently on a state visit in Finland. One of the highlights during the visit that takes place between 10 and 12 May is a concert hosted by the Grand Duke and Duchess at Finlandia Hall on Wednesday 11 May. Recordings from the concert will be given as a gift for all the Finns.



Echternach International Festival 2016

The abbey will be echoing to the sounds of jazz and classical music

Echternach International Festival 2016, a festival of classical music and jazz with an international reputation, will be held from 19 May to 15 July 2016. Benedikt Fahr will be in charge of the classical music and Gast Waltzing in charge of the jazz; each year the festival attracts internationally famous performers to the small medieval town on the banks of the Sûre.

On 17 May 2016, as every Whit Tuesday, the Hopping Procession of Echternach takes place. This Luxembourg tradition, which is well known beyond the borders of the country, attracts every year thousands of believers and onlookers to the abbey town.

The FilmFund Luxembourg, which supports audiovisual production in the Grand Duchy, will be represented at the 69th Cannes Film Festival, from 11 to 22 May 2016. At the International Village, the FilmFund's pavilion will be home to 19 entities. This is the 14th time the FilmFund has been represented at the Festival.

'Streik!' Look back through a hundred years of trade union activity in the Grand Duchy

The documentary by director Andy Bausch is to be released on 11 May 2016

When talking about the Grand Duchy's recent history and the basis of the country's wealth, mention is often made of the success of the iron and steel industry in the Grand Duchy. Few people recall that this success was based on thousands of miners and steelworkers, some of them as young as 13 years old, who used to work for up to fifteen hours a day with no social security, no health insurance, and no job guarantee. With 'Streik!' ('Strike!'), the documentary by Luxembourgish director Andy Bausch builds a monument to them, retracing the history of the trade union movement in the Grand Duchy.

The festival is to be held in the former mining area from 11 May to 3 July 2016, with the theme 'Urban landscapes - industrial landscapes'

There is no doubt that the Grand Duchy owes its wealth to the presence of a powerful steel industry which had its heyday in the middle of the twentieth century. Today, this industrial past is still present, not only in the natural and urban landscapes in the country's south, but also in the minds of local residents. At this second Festival of Industrial Culture and Innovation, the former mining area will be looking back at its origins, and will also be taking a look into the future.



See puppets in action at the Marionettefestival in Tadler

20 productions from all over Europe for children and grownups

During Pentacost weekend from 14 to 16 May 2016, the puppets come to life in the picturesque village of Tadler, in Luxembourg's North (near Esch-sur-Sûre). In the context of the biannual Marionettefestival, 20 productions from all over Europe and 130 open-air productions will be performed.

Luxembourgish state visit in the Republic of Finland

A large economic delegation will accompany the grand ducal couple in the context of a multisectorial economic mission

At the invitation of the President of the Republic of Finland, Sauli Niinisto, TRH the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess will visit the Republic of Finland for a state visit, from 10 to 12 May 2016. They will be accompanied by Vice Prime Minister, Minister of the Economy Étienne Schneider, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Jean Asselborn, and Minister for the Environment Carole Dieschbourg.

Signature of MoU between Luxembourg Government and Deep Space Industries

The MoU concerns the exploration and use of space resources

The Luxembourg Government, the public-law banking institution 'Société Nationale de Crédit et d’Investissement' (SNCI) and the asteroid mining company Deep Space Industries (DSI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation within the initiative planning the exploration, use and commercialization of resources from Near Earth Objects (NEOs), such as asteroids.



The Minett Park opens for new adventures

This open-air museum is dedicated to Luxembourg iron ore mining history

Until 25 September 2016, amateurs of vintage trains and Luxembourg industrial heritage – and everybody else – can experience new adventures at the Minett Park Fond-de-Gras in the South of the country. This is an open-air museum dedicated to Luxembourg's iron ore mining past, a period in the history of the Grand Duchy which contributed to the country's wealth and to the development of the railways.



Creation of a regional tourist office for the Centre/West region

The whole of the Grand Duchy will now have a professional regional structure for tourism

The assembly to constitute the regional tourist office for the Centre and West regions of the Grand Duchy was held at the Ministry of the Economy on 2 May 2016. The founder members interested in the development of tourism in their region included municipal administrations, tourist accommodation associations, a number of associations working in favour of tourism, and one private company.


New technologies

ICT Spring Europe 2016 - Collaborative Abundance

ICT event of the year - 10 and 11 May 2016

On 10 and 11 May 2016, the Grand Duchy will be the focal point of the ICT world - with ICT Spring Europe, which brings together the sector's professionals in Luxembourg. About 150 speakers from globally renowned companies - including Apple, Canal +, Renault, PayPal, BMW, SES, Monster and KPMG - will make the conference a key European event in the ICT sector.

The pilgrimage to Our Lady of Fatima in Wiltz

Nearly 20,000 faithful participate every Ascension Thursda

Every Ascension Thursday, nearly 20,000 faithful, most of them from the Portuguese immigrant community, take part in the pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima above Wiltz, in the northern part of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The next pilgrimage takes place on Thursday, 5 May 2016.

The success of Esch-sur-Alzette's great cultural event continues

From 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. on 7 May 2016, 23 cultural institutions in Esch-sur-Alzette will be throwing open their doors to the general public for some surprises and emotions. Concerts, exhibitions, shows, screenings and guided backstage tours at the various venues – all for free!



'Like a Jazz Machine', 2016 edition

Within very few years, the international jazz festival in Dudelange as created a very solid reputation for itself

From Thursday, 5 to Sunday 8 May 2016, the Cultural Centre opderschmelz in Dudelange organises the fourth edition of its international jazz festival 'Like a Jazz Machine'. As in every year, the festival offers a range which is both diverse and representative of contemporary trends in this musical genre. Over 80 musicians are announced.



67th Flèche du Sud

The 2016 edition will take place between 4 May and 8 May

Bringing together Luxembourgish and international cyclists, the 67th Flèche du Sud is going to take place between 4 May and 8 May 2016. This cyclist event is essential for all fans of cycling; a prestigious stage race, the most well-known internationally. As a consequence, a number of renowned cyclists will take part.



The Space Forum, on 10 and 11 May 2016 - space meets digital in the Grand Duchy!

The Space Forum combines two of the Grand Duchy's leading sectors - space technologies and ICT

The Space Forum brings together representatives of Europe's Space Clusters and Tech Valleys, informal investors, satellite operators and suppliers to the satellite launching industry, and land stations. Under the title 'Space Meets Digital', the event is being held at the same time as the ICT Spring event, which is one of the biggest conferences on ICT in Europe, on 10 and 11 May 2016.

The Grand Duchy marks the 700th anniversary of the birth of its very own count, king and emperor

From 26 May to 28 August 2016, the Luxembourg City History Museum (MHVL) is showing a temporary exhibition devoted to Charles IV (1316 - 1378), Count of Luxembourg, King of Bohemia, and Holy Roman Emperor. In the Czech Republic he is considered one of the Fathers of the Nation; in the Grand Duchy the son of John the Blind is remembered as the man who elevated Luxembourg from the status of a county to that of a duchy.



'Elsy Jacobs' Luxembourg women's cycling festival

A stubborn, heroic fighter and a Grand Duchess — the career of Elsy Jacobs honoured

From 29 April to 1 May 2016, the Grand Duchy will be remembering its cycling heroine Elsy Jacobs, the first woman to win the title of world champion of road cycling in 1958, with a cycling festival in her honour. Born in 1933, Elsy Jacobs embarked on a remarkable career in cycling, participating in 1,059 races between 1955 and 1978, of which she won 301.

The May wreaths inaugurate the summer

On 1 May, in towns and villages throughout the Grand Duchy, wreaths of grass-green foliage are in evidence here and there. These 'Meekränz', which are usually made by local associations, are hung on the front of a building in the centre of the town or village: the municipal authorities' office or a café.



The bathing season is open!

The water quality of lakes and ponds for bathing is considered to be excellent

Since 1 May, although temperatures may still be a bit low, lakes and ponds will be reopened for fans of swimming and tanning.

Luxembourg has one of the highest rates of unionisation in Europe

On the 1st of May, Luxembourgers celebrate Labour Day The International Workers' Day was first celebrated in the United States in 1886, and several years later in Europe. In Luxembourg, this legal holiday is traditionally the occasion for large gatherings of the union movements.

'Konscht am Gronn' - discover art in a thousand-year-old part of the city

Every first Sunday in the month, from May until October, don't miss a chance to discover and buy open-air art

From 1 May to 2 October, the Rue Münster in the heart of the Grund district in Luxembourg City is turned into a huge open-air exhibition venue once a month. It's nothing new; in fact, it's really quite a tradition: 'Konscht am Gronn' (Art in the Grund) has been in existence since 2006. It's always worth taking a look!

Open doors weekend in about 40 museums in Luxembourg

On Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May 2016, museums in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg are going to open their doors for guided tours, workshops, performances, meetings with artists, conferences, concerts, tastings and animation for kids. Organised for the 19th time by the 'd'stater muséeën'-group (museums of the City of Luxembourg), this year's 'Invitation to museums' is open to the whole country for the 7th time.
