The population in Luxembourg doesn't stop growing, that's what reveals a study recently published by the National Statistics and Economic Studies Institute (Statec). In 2015, the number of persons living in the Grand Duchy increased by 13,291 to attend 576,249 inhabitants in total. This represents an increase of 2.4%.
The study showed that with 6,115 newborn children the birth rate in Luxembourg remained stable. It decreased by 0.4% for Luxembourgish parents and increases by 2% for foreign parents. However, migration remains the main cause of the demographic growth in Luxembourg (80%): the migratory balance (the relation between the number of people who settled down in the Grand Duchy and those who left it) totals 11,159 new inhabitants. As a result, the percentage of foreigners in Luxembourg amounted to 46.7% at the beginning of 2016. But the majority of immigrants are not Portuguese anymore, but French (20%).
Furthermore, it seems that marriage is "in" again in Luxembourg (2,052 in total), because in comparison to 2014, 400 more couples tied the knot in 2015, of which 139 were same-sex marriages (90 between men, 49 between women). The number of divorces however decreased by 7.4% compared to 2014.
