'The Dark Side of the Moon' has been released

The film follows the life of ambitious, unbeatable business lawyer Urs Blank. However, the latest merger he has managed ends badly when one of the bosses involved commits suicide before his very eyes. Shattered by the experience, he runs away; he meets Lucy, a young hippie who initiates him in the use of 'magic mushrooms'. Their meeting causes him to question his entire life and awakens a side of him that is the complete opposite of his organised life as a lawyer - a dark, violent side.

On 27 January 2016, Luxembourg For Finance (LFF), Luxembourg's agency for the development of the financial centre, has launched a new animated video entitled 'Luxembourg in the EU Single Market: Offering you a world of choice' showing how the internal market offers European citizens more choice in almost every area, including the choice to benefit from Luxembourg's unique expertise in cross-border finance.



The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is one of the least corrupt countries in the world

It stands in 10th place out of 168 countries, according to Transparency International

As in 2014, the Grand Duchy ranks among the cleanest countries in the world in the 2015 edition of the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) drawn up by Transparency International, a non-governmental organisation fighting corruption. The country has even moved up two places.

The Nation Branding Committee decided to launch a Creathon – a sort of creativity marathon – about Luxembourg's identity on 4 and 5 March 2016.

On 22 Janaury 2016, the new extension of the Luxembourg City Conservatory was inaugurated. This is a building that adds 1362 m2 to this leading institution of the musical scene in Luxembourg. A new cross-border fund for the development of cinema production in the Greater Region!

The fund is aimed at authors and producers whose projects are in relation with the Greater Region

In the context of the 37th Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival, the cross-border agreement concerning the establishment of a cinema development fund by the partners of the 4 countries making up the Greater Region was signed, and the content and objectives were detailed during a press conference. The Fund will have an annual allocation of € 55,000 and is aimed at writers and producers whose projects are linked to the Greater Region.



The ice wine has been harvested

The majority of domains had given up all hope due to the unusually high temperatures

Despite the record temperatures in autumn and winter 2015, the sharp drop in temperatures in January allowed the harvest of the last grapes under the best conditions in order to produce ice wine. However, the majority of vintners had already abandoned all hope, preferring to harvest the grapes they had left on the vines earlier in order to produce lat harvest wines, instead of risking losing them to molds.

The automobile festival sheds a light on Luxembourg automotive components sector

From 23 January until 1 February 2016, Luxembourg's garage owners are inviting to their 52nd Autofestival. This festival is an excellent opportunity to enjoy good deals on cars and see the new models. Dring the event, organised by the Luxembourg Association of Car Distributors (Association des distributeurs automobiles luxembourgeois, ADAL) and the Federation of Garage Owners of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (Fédération des garagistes du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, FEGARLUX), all of the car dealerships will be open every day.

An international quiz about Europe — made in Luxembourg

5,000 people took part in the CVCE Europa Quiz

To mark the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Luxembourg launched a major international competition about European integration in which participants were given 200 questions to answer about a variety of European topics over a period of 6 months. More than 5,000 people took part in the quiz, answering a different question about Europe every day over a six-month period. On 20 January 2016, the happy winners were announced.



'Chau, Beyond the Lines' nominated for a 2016 Oscar

'Chau, Beyond the Lines' has been nominated for a 2016 Oscar in the Best Documentary Short Film category. The film has had the benefit of the contribution of Jerry Franck, a young cameraman and producer of Luxembourg origin, who was totally involved in creating the film, directed by his wife, Courtney Marsh. The film follows the life of the young Chau, one of the thousands of Vietnamese children still affected by the American forces' use of Agent Orange during the Vietnam War.



BEE SECURE's 'Bibi and friends' initiative wins European Crime Prevention Network award

'Bibi the bee' makes young children aware of the dangers of the digital environment

Since 2013, Bibi - BEE SECURE's little bee - has been busy accompanying children aged 3 upwards as they discover the Internet. The initiative has now received an award at the European level from the European Crime Prevention Network for its work in accompanying very young children as they use the Internet for the first time. The Network praises its efforts to make children aware of the dangers of the Internet in a playful fashion.



The Grand Duchy in third position in the Global Talent Competitiveness Index

Emphasis placed on quality of living, international environment, and high level of qualifications

On 19 January 2016, INSEAD published its Global Talent Competitiveness Index (GTCI), an annual study drawn up in collaboration with the Adecco Group and the Human Capital Leadership Institute (HCLI) of Singapore. Switzerland, Singapore and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg occupy the top three places, as they did last year.



Fit for Start launches first open call for participants

As the pilot edition is drawing to a close, the first open call for applications for the ‘Fit for Start’ programme was launched on 18 January 2016. Developed by Luxinnovation in cooperation with the Ministry of the Economy and the Technoport incubator, the programme offers ICT start-ups in Luxembourg 16 weeks of coaching by “Lean Start-Up” experts and a public grant of €50,000.

On Wednsesday 20 January 2016 took place the 3rd award ceremony of the 'Emile and Aline Mayrisch' prize. organised by the 'Cercle des Amis de Colpach'. Working closely together with the National Archives, the Pierre Werner Institute and ArcelorMittal, and under the high patronage of the Ministre of Culture, the prize, which includes 10,000 € was awarded to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Wilfried Loth for his book Europas Einigung. Eine unvollendete Geschichte.


Education and training

Presentation of the International School in Differdange

On 18 January 2016, the Minister of Education, Children and Youth Claude Meisch announced the opening of an International School in Differdange (EIDD). The EIDD will be a public-funded school and will follow the European School syllabuses. Unlike the European Schools currently established in the Grand Duchy, the new school will be open to all pupils, with no registration fees.

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, co-founder of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB)

Luxembourg's Minister of Finance, Pierre Gramegna, is also one of the bank's Governors.

The Grand Duchy was the first country outside Asia to apply to the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and be accepted as a non-regional member. The aim of this new international financial institution is to promote development in Asian countries by meeting their need for infrastructures. At the bank's inaugural meetings, its Articles of Agreement, procedures and internal regulations were adopted and its leaders elected before it officially commenced operations.



'Colonia' wins Bavarian Film Award

The French-German-Luxembourgish co-production is to be released shortly

'Colonia', by Florian Gallenberger, co-produced by Iris Productions, follows air hostess Lena (Emma Watson) caught up in the middle of the rioting following the 1973 military coup in Chile as she searches for her boyfriend Daniel (Daniel Brühl), who has been abducted by the secret police and taken to Colonia Dignidad, a terrible place under the control of former Nazi Paul Schäfer. The prize was handed over to Benjamin Herrmann and Christian Becker, the film's producers.



The AAA rating confirmed

Fitch confirms Luxembourg's AAA rating with a stable outlook

As of 8 January 2016, rating agency Fitch has confirmed the 'AAA' rating of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg with 'stable' outlook. Thus, Luxembourg continues to benefit from the highest rating of the three major credit agencies S&P, Moody's and Fitch.



The Grand Duchy embarks on zero pesticides in public areas

Their use has been banned by law since 1 January 2016

One of its characteristics the Grand Duchy is particularly proud of is the exceptionally high quality of life. That's why the Luxembourg environment agency Ëmweltberodung, together with, among others, the Department of the Environment at the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, launched the 'Ouni Pestizidien' (zero pesticides) campaign in 2014, to increase awareness among members of the public and the authorities.



The Grand Duchy launches a European supercalculator project

This initiative on the part of the European Commission and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg will enable the EU to catch up

Most of the top ten supercalculators in the world are in either China or the USA; only one European computer is on the list. A European Commission initiative, in which the Grand Duchy plays a central role, aims to turn the situation around by developing High Performance Computing (HPC) technology.

The Luxembourg City Tourist Office's indicators for tourist activity

As the first results of the 2015 survey keep coming in, the Luxembourg City Tourist Office can confirm that the indicators of tourist activity in the capital all show an important increase in 2015, as compared to 2014. In all, 680,897 (+12.33%) visitors were informed, recieved or taken care of by the different offices of the LCTO as the 'Destination Management Organisation'.

Public conference on Nation Branding, on 27 January 2016

After thinking about it, it's time for action

What would be a strong image for an open, dynamic, reliable country? That's the question being asked at the moment as part of the nation branding process launched in 2014 by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the Ministry of the Economy, accompanied by the Nation Branding Committee. The Nation Branding Committee invites members of the public to a conference at 6.30 p.m. on 27 January 2016 at Luxembourg City's Grand Théâtre, at which the plan for implementing the nation branding strategy will be presented.

For the past fifteen years, a regional cultural institution on the border with Germany, in the beautiful Moselle valley, has been presenting wide-ranging offer of entertainment, art and history. STATEC has carried out a study not only on satisfaction with life but also on individuals' subjective well-being.

Luxembourgers are satisfied with their lives and feel their lives have meaning

Efforts have been made for some years to use official statistics to produce indicators of well-being that are more meaningful than just per capita GDP, including subjective well-being. The results of the survey show that in terms of general satisfaction with life, the Grand Duchy compares relatively favourably with the other European countries, with an average score of 7.5 out of 10, compared with an average of 7.1 in the EU-28.



Paediatric care system to be improved

The new system will ensure better national coverage

It's never much fun taking a child to the doctor's, particularly in an emergency. To improve national coverage for paediatric care in the Grand Duchy, to increase the number of players capable of dealing with a sick child, and to reduce pressure on paediatricians, the Government - together with the other players - has overhauled the current system.

The 2015 cinema vintage - the emancipation of Luxembourg film

Mammejong, Baby(a)lone, Song of the Sea, Colonia - Luxembourg film is present on all of the big festivals and screens

Audiovisual production in the Grand Duchy has been expanding rapidly in the past few years. And the 2015 vintage is exceptionally rich because, as well as for the Luxembourg coproductions, the year also brough us outstanding Luxembourg productions, such as Eng nei Zäit, Mammejong or Baby(a)lone. As far as prizes are concerned, everybody is looking forward to the 2016 Academy Awards, at which the Luxembourg coproduction The Brand New Testament has been nominated.



HRH the Grand Duke Jean celebrates his 95th birthday

The 5th sovereign of the Luxembourg dynasty was born on 5 January 1921

On 5 January 2016, HRH the Grand Duke Jean celebrates his 95th birthday. A concert in his honour is going to take place on Saturday, 9 January 2016 at the Luxembourg Philharmonie. While Grand Duchess Charlotte symbolises the Grand Duchy during the first part of the 20th century, Grand Duke Jean epitomises the second half of this century of upheaval.



Inauguration of a WebForce3 school in Luxembourg: forming 90 web developers in 18 months

The WebForce3 school, which forms immediately operational Web developers and integrators through an intensive training course of 490 hours in three months and a half, was inaugurated on 14 January 2016. The school is located on the premises of Technoport in Esch-sur-Alzette, which is a very stimulating environment for the future players in the digital transformation in the Grand Duchy.

On 6 January it's Twelfth Night

Twelfth Night is also celebrated in Luxembourg

On 6 January each year, Luxembourgers celebrate 'Dräikinneksdag' (literally, the day of the three kings), or the Feast of the Epiphany (Twelfth Night). Epiphany is a Christian festival which celebrates the arrival of the Three Wise Men, or Kings, to see the baby Jesus. On the occasion of the Feast of the Epiphany it is common in Luxembourg to eat a traditional pastry.

37th Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival: 'Eng nei Zäit' in the official competition

After 23 years with no Luxembourgish film in the official competition, Christophe Wagner's second full-length film will be in the competition for the Max Ophüls Prize

Christophe Wagner's film entitled Eng nei Zäit has been selected for the official competition at the 37th Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival (Filmfestival Max Ophüls Preis), to be held in Saarbrücken from 18 to 24 January 2016. There has been no Luxembourgish film in the festival's official competition for the past twenty-three years.

In Luxembourg, every employee benefits from 10 official holidays per year

In Luxembourg, the duration of the annual holiday consists of 25 workdays per year, regardless of the age of the employee. However, a collective convention or an individual agreement between employer and employee may allow a higher number of annual holidays. Added to the annual holidays are 10 official holidays per year.
