Presentation of a national competence centre for composite materials

The National Composite Centre – Luxembourg (NCC-L) will be launched in 2016

On 18 December 2015, Marc Hansen, Deputy Minister for Higher Education and Research, and Francine Closener, Secretary of State for the Economy, presented at a press conference the future 'National Composite Centre - Luxembourg' (NCC-L). The actors involved in both public and private research pool their skills through a technology platform established within the Luxembourg Institute for Science and Technology (LIST) in order to further boost in Luxembourg the development and processing of innovative materials for example in the automotive and aerospace business sectors.

Luxembourg presents the preliminary achievements of its Presidency of the Council of the European Union

The Presidency took place from 1 July to 31 December 2015

With the 12th Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU drawing to a close, a preliminary report of the main results achieved over the past six months was published on 18 December 2015. The Luxembourg Presidency worked, in keeping with its traditions and convictions, to put European citizens at the heart of its initiatives, while ensuring that the real, direct interests of citizens are better taken account of in all EU policies.

On 22 December 2015, the National Employment Agency (Agence pour le développement de l'emploi, ADEM) put its brand new website online - the employment portal ( The portal is intended to provide jobseekers with information on the ADEM's services and to provide employers with information on measures to promote employment.

With the new Hachette guide of the collection Sur la route des vins (On the wine rrail) devoted to the Luxembourg Moselle, the French publisher takes you on a journey through picturesque villages, ancient terraces where the vines grow in an ideal climate and museums dedicated to art of wine, all linked to the Moselle, this river that runs between France, Germany and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Lëtzebuerger Filmpräis 2016: the nominations are unveiled

Baby(a)lone, Brigands, Mammejong and Eng Nei Zäit nominated for the prestigious trophy of the Luxembourg film

D'Filmakademie officially unveiled the list of nominations for the next Lëtzebuerger Filmpräis to be held on 5 March 2016 at Luxembourg City's Grand Théâtre. 9 short films, 16 coproductions, 4 Luxembourg feature films, 9 documentaries, 3 animated feature films and 3 animated short films will compete to win a trophy. In total the academy has selected 30 nominations including 14 nominations for the prize for best artistic contribution and 16 for the prize for best technical contribution.

From 4 January to 21 March 2016, Casino Luxembourg - Forum for Contemporary Art - a leading museum of the visual arts, in the city centre - will be closed for a complete redevelopment which will not only increase the exhibition area available but will also have a major impact on the institution's cultural concept.

Funds to support housing and language-learning projects

On Thursday, 10 December 2015 the 'Oeuvre nationale de secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte' charity presented its plan to help with the reception and integration of people benefiting from international protection and issued a request for projects which it is going to fund with a budget of up to 10 million euros, to which 5 millions which exclusively concern the social welfare offices are added.

The production of this wine specialty requires following a very precise process

Straw wine is one of the most rare and noble Luxembourg specialties: after two months of drying, the grapes harvested in early October on the sunny slopes of the Luxembourg Moselle are pressed. However, it takes about 2 years for the 2015 vintage to be ready.

On 12 December 2015, the cream of the cream of European cinema was celebrated at the European Film Awards 2015 Berlin - and among them two Luxembourg coproductions, Song of the Sea and The Brand New Testament, which were both awarded.

In total, 11 Luxembourgish restaurants are listed in the 2016 edition of the famous 'Michelin Guide'

The 2016 edition of the 'Michelin Guide Belgium & Luxembourg', which lists the best restaurants in Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is available as of now. And despite some changes, the result is remarkable for Luxembourg: with 11 starred restaurants for 563,000 inhabitants, the Grand Duchy continues to have the largest per capita concentration of starred tables in the world.

Within the European Union (EU), the proportion of people between the ages of 16 and 74 who have ordered goods or services for their personal use on the Internet ('e-buyers') has been increasing steadily, from 30% in 2007 to 53% in 2015. In the Grand Duchy, the proportion of people who have made purchases online is 78%.



Conference on financing the circular economy in Luxembourg

On 10 December 2015, a conference on 'Financing the circular economy' is to be held at the headquarters of the European Investment Bank (EIB) in Luxembourg-Kirchberg. The event is being organised jointly by the European Commission, the EIB and the Luxembourg Ministry of the Economy as part of the Luxembourg Presidency; its aim is to get the financial sector more involved in the circular economy.

The National Museum of History and Art (MNHA) opened a new permanent exhibition that traces the history of money on Luxembourg soil. From Antiquity to the euro; from discovery of treasures in Luxembourg to the medals of former Prime Minister Joseph Bech, the exhibition reveals large history, but also little Luxembourg stories through numismatics.

In 2015 the Grand Duchy has once again been very visible on the scenes worldwide thanks to music:LX

Mutiny On The Bounty, Jeff Herr Corporation, Artemandoline, Gast Waltzing etc.: all names of bands and musicians who have found fame not just in their country of origin - Luxembourg - but also well beyond its borders. And if Luxembourgish musicians are becoming increasingly well known in other countries, it is largely thanks to the music:LX export agency, which has just presented its positive results for 2015 on 8 December 2015.

On 8 December 2015 the Ministry of the Interior presented a new platform for viewing general development plans ('PAG') on the Geoportal, the official national platform for geographical data and information. The project is an integral part of the Government's efforts to achieve administrative simplification.

The Film Fund Luxembourg turns 25

The Film Fund Luxembourg celebrated 25 years with an academic session at the Utopolis Cinema on 7 December 2015. Thanks to the national support efforts of the Film Fund Luxembourg, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has managed in recent years to find its place in the international audiovisual industry. Proof of this is that a good number of (co-)productions have been awarded prizes at international film festivals.



Opening of a WebForce3 school in Luxembourg: forming 90 web developers in 18 months

The WebForce3 school, which forms immediately operational Web developers and integrators through an intensive training course of 490 hours in three months and a half, opened its first school in Luxembourg this Monday, 30 November 2015, at the premises of Technoport in Esch-sur-Alzette, which is a very stimulating environment for the future players in the digital transformation in the Grand Duchy.



Luxtram: a scale model allows you to live the tram experience!

The work is very large and will not only change the image of the City of Luxembourg, but also how thousands of people pass through the city every day: the new tram, the first line of which will open in the second half of 2017. The 15th edition of the Venice Architecture Biennale is to be held from 28 May to 27 November 2016 in the Arsenal district and the Giardini pavilions, but also the City where the national presentations take place, including the Grand Duchy's pavilion in the Ca' del Duca in the San Marco district.

'Luxembourg Light Nights' to close the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union

The judiciary quarter of Luxembourg City will be under assault from both sound and light

On 18 and 19 December 2015, the City of Luxembourg – in close cooperation with the Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO) – will be offering a Sound and Light Show as part of the celebrations marking the end of the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union, turning the façades of the buildings in the judicial quarter into giant illuminated stages retelling fascinating stories which will transport the audience to the fabulous fairytale world of illuminated projections and scenography.

World AIDS Day

Ending the AIDS epidemic in the context of the Sustainable Development Objective

Every year on 1 December is an opportunity for global mobilisation against AIDS, where information, prevention and awareness are key. This day is also the moment to remember those who fell victim to the illness. This year it is under the header of the 'Fast Track' strategy of UNAIDS, which seeks to accelerate putting the AIDS epidemic, which is a threat to public health, to an end by 2030, as retained in the Sustainable Development Objectives of the 2030 Agenda.

2015's late-harvested wines are in preparation

2015 looks like being a promising year.

The wine specialities of Luxembourg's Moselle region include a number of special wines, including late-harvested wine ('vendanges tardives'). These are sweet wines, perfect for accompanying foie gras or for serving as a dessert wine. Only about 2,000 bottles are produced each year, so you may want to hurry!



National Literary Competition 2015

Since 1978, the Ministry of Culture has been organising an annual competition aimed at encouraging literary creation in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg: the National Literary Competition. On 22 October 2015, the Ministry published the results of the 2015 edition of the contest.



The Grand Duchy hails its best sportsmen and women for the year 2015

As every year, the best sportsman, the best sportswoman and the best team of the year have been elected.

The annual sports press gala was held at the Casino 2000 in Mondorf-les-Bains on 3 December 2015; the names of the sport personalities of the year, selected by a panel of members of the Grand Duchy's sports press, were revealed. Many talented sportspeople in the Grand Duchy would each have deserved to win. But there can be only one winner in each category.
